Artist Statement:
This painting celebrates the traditional Sri Lankan temple drummer, an important
symbol of the country’s cultural and religious heritage. Dressed in a white
sarong, a shawl around his neck, and barefoot, he represents generations of
skilled drummers who have preserved this ancient tradition. The drumbeat has
long accompanied temple ceremonies, daily Buddha Pooja, grand Peraheras, royal
processions, weddings, and other cultural celebrations. Through this artwork, I
honour the dedication, pride, and enduring spirit of Sri Lanka’s traditional
drummers.
