The Kithul Tapper – on Canves Sz 10X13.5 inches

Artist Statement- This painting portrays the traditional Kithul toddy tapping industry,
one of Sri Lanka’s oldest rural livelihoods and an important part of the
country’s cultural heritage. The climber skillfully ascends a Kithul palm to
collect its sweet sap, a task that demands courage, balance, and years of
experience. This precious sap is used to produce traditional treacle, jaggery,
vinegar, and toddy, making it an essential ingredient in many Sri Lankan foods
and customs. Through this artwork, I pay tribute to the hardworking men who
continue to preserve this time-honoured tradition despite its gradual decline
