This painting honours the traditional rubber tapping industry of Sri Lanka,
once one of the country’s major sources of income. It portrays a woman
carefully tapping the bark of a rubber tree, allowing the latex to flow into a
small collecting cup attached to the trunk. This work reflects the dedication
and skill of the many women who supported their families through this demanding
occupation. Today, traditional rubber tapping survives in only a few regions,
making it an important part of Sri Lanka’s cultural and agricultural heritage.
